Babes, Easter is going to be here before we know it and Spring! I have been working on some fun Spring & Easter hair tutorials and I am so excited to share my first one with you. This beautiful french fishtail and french dutch braid is perfect for you to wear as a mom, as a teenager, or for your little girls. I think that it is a style that anyone can wear and if you have shorter hair it can be perfectly done with a french fishtail across the front and pinned back, you just wouldn’t be able to do the french dutch braid if your hair is too short. That is one of my favorite things about this style is that it can be so versatile. I love that it is so beautiful, sophisticated, and keeps your hair out of your face for all of your spring activities.
First, I want to share with you my two must have products for this style. I absolutely love my Goody Clean Radiance Oval Cushion Brush. I love that it keeps my hair so soft and beautiful. I love that it has copper bristles that massage my scalp. It gives me a little mommy spa trip every time that I use it, plus the copper bristles reduce natural buildup in your hair that build up over time so what is better than that? Trust me girl, it is a must have. Next, I love the Goody Ouchless Elastics. They hold 10X more ponytails per elastic, yes you read that right! They don’t pull or snag my hair which I love when I need to secure a braid for a minute and my hands are tied up, then I can easily slide the elastic out of my hair and know that it would pull or snag it. If you have hair, you will love these. Trust me. Okay, on to the braid!
First, start by sectioning a diagonal piece of hair from about an inch back from your hair line to the nape of your neck. Once you have that section, take the back section that you are not using and secure it with an Ouchless Elastic. After the section you are not using is tied back, you will start to french fishtail braid. Take a small section from the top and then split it into two pieces. To have your braid on top, you are going to want to take the section that you are moving to the other side to the bottom of the opposite side’s section. Are you with me? Take a small section from the right side on the outside of that section, cross it under itself and over to the left side, then repeat for the left side to the right side. Now, grab a piece from below like a regular french braid, but don’t add it to the section you had started with, simply just cross it over to the opposite side. After you have added hair to both sides, start from the beginning and take a small piece from your original section and cross them both over, add a piece of hair and cross it over to both sides, and then repeat until you get to the nape of your neck. When you get to the bottom, tie it off with another Goody Ouchless Elastics.
We are going to pancake the fishtail braid next. This will make your braid appear bigger than it is. Who doesn’t want that? This step is really easy, but intimidates a lot of people. Hold on to the bottom of your braid or the elastic with one hand and tug out each section to the desired thickness. I generally don’t tug too hard, instead do multiple times of tugging on each section to get my desired braid.
After your fishtail braid is pancaked, you are going to start your dutch french braid across the back. Start your braid at the crown of your head on the opposite side as the fishtail braid. To create the dutch braid, or your braid on top, you are going to cross the hair under the middle section. Start by splitting your hair into three pieces, cross your left piece under the middle, and then your right. When you have crossed over both your left and right sides, add a small section of hair to each side. Repeat until your braid hits the nape of your neck, you run out of hair, or you get to the fishtail piece that we already tied off.
Once you get to the fishtail portion, slide off the Goody Ouchless Elastics (see why it is so great that it doesn’t pull or snag your hair) and add your fishtail braid to one of your three strands from your dutch braid. Continue braiding until you reach the bottom of your hair.
Once you reach the bottom of your hair, tie off your braid with another Goody Ouchless Elastics. You can then pancake your dutch braid (remember this is just tugging the sections gently out to make your braid appear bigger) to achieve your desired look.
This braid may be a little tricky if you are a novice braider, but with time, it will become simple and one of your go to hairstyles. I love that it is quick, keeps my hair out of my face, and is absolutely stunning for spring.
