Beaded Hair Extensions Installation
+++ Please note that I don’t use Bohyme hair anymore due to the quality not holding up to my standards. I have used Laced Hair and completely stand behind it and it’s quality for brunettes. (Blonde hair is totally different and different brands work differently with blondes) If you have any questions please feel free to comment or email me! +++
I think we all know by now that I am very open about having hair extensions. I love my hair, but I am the first to say that it isn’t real. I have had hair extensions for about 5 years now and I will honestly tell you that they are the best thing that I have done for myself. They are a little high maintenance to take care of, but they make my mornings really low maintenance. They hold a curl for days, let me have a big fat pony tail that makes it appear I have put a lot of effort into my hair when I haven’t, and make me feel really good about myself. I have tried a ton of different extension brands, installation methods, how I take care of them, etc. I have found the best of the best after trying different things for 5 years and I am so excited to share those beaded hair extensions with you!
Here is my natural hair before and after. My natural hair is really thin. Like I can use braces elastics to hold it in a pony tail thin. It doesn’t hold a curl ever so I damage it a lot when I don’t have beaded hair extensions in because I have to put heat on it all the time. It is really lifeless and doesn’t have any body. I wish I was blessed with good hair, but I wasn’t so at least I can buy it ha.
What are Hand Tied Wefts? Hand Tied Wefts are when your stylist (DON’T TRY THIS BY YOURSELF!) puts rows horizontally across your head with beads using only your natural hair. She then takes wefts of extensions and sews these beaded hair extensions to that natural row that she has created. Most people do two rows which is what I have here. We sewed in 4 wefts on my top row and 5 wefts on my bottom row. Normally people do 2-3 wefts on each row, but this girl likes her big fat pony tail and to have a lot of extension hair to hold a curl.
Make sure you are going to a trained stylist. I go to Michele at Salon Couture and she is amazing. My natural hair has never been stronger or longer even with extensions. I always get asked if my beaded hair extensions damage my hair, the answer is always that they will a little bit, however, if you go to a trained stylist then they shouldn’t do damage that you notice at all. Michele is very careful with where she places them, how she puts them in, and the product she uses. I am being completely 100% honest when I say I have never noticed any damage in my hair since going to Michele for my beaded hair extensions. If you want her info I would love to share her because she is a gem! DM me, email me, and follow her on Instagram @hairby_michele. She is located in Harrisville, Utah.
Let’s chat for a second about the brand of extensions that you choose. I have tried many different brands. The first brand I used I liked a lot, my hair (with taking care of it really carefully) lasted me about 8 months before needing to buy new. It held up really well, stayed moisturized (with taking care of it well), and lasted really good. My last brand of extensions was a little rough. It was really dry, tangled easily, and didn’t hold up well. I bought the same amount of hair as my first brand of beaded hair extensions and it only lasted me 3 months. It was a cheaper set of hair price wise, however if that is what you need to do, then I can share some tips of how I kept it looking good. I am currently trying a new brand of hair and if you are interested to know what it is or how I feel about it, feel free to email me (heybabe @ danimarieblog.com) or direct message me on Instagram.
1 – First Michele sectioned my hair off about 2/3 of the way.
2 – She starts creating her natural beaded row with beads. She will take this all the way around my head.
3 – This is what the row looks like completed.
4 – She clips the wefts to my hair in layers. This helps her make sure they are centered on my head, go far enough around my head, and are exactly how she wants them to look.
5 – This is how they look once clipped. She clips each layer individually.
6 – She sews the wefts to the row of your natural hair that she created. Then she repeats the entire process again on a portion of your hair 1/3 of the way down.
7 – She next trims and blends your extensions into your natural hair. Next, curl hair and style it.
8 – Final look from the front.
8 – Final look from the back.
Having your beaded hair extensions look natural is all dependent on your stylist. When I say you need to go to a professional I mean it. I did my own extensions when I graduated high school and it was bad… like really bad. I had bald spots, thinned my hair way out, they didn’t look natural, etc. It is worth it to find a stylist that is reasonably priced and to trust them with keeping your natural hair healthy. If you don’t keep your natural hair healthy, you won’t have any hair to attach your extensions to!
Please let me know what questions you have about extensions and I would love to answer them! I can do a full Q&A post if you would like! You tell me what you want to know!

Can’t believe how natural looking this is! So beautiful. This is exactly what I need for my hair!
Jayme says
How long would you say these last you? How much do they cost? How often do you have to get them touched up or tightened? I have naturally thin curly hair would something like this work with my natural curls or would I still have heat style my natural hair to match the texture of the extensions? Can you wear your hair other styles other than down or is the row pretty noticeable if you do? Sorry for all the questions! I’ve been looking into getting these for awhile now, but can’t find anyone where I live who does them. Thanks for your time!!
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Jayme! I am going to do a Q&A 2 weeks from today and I will answer all of these questions! Don’t even be sorry!! I am seriously more than happy to answer them! XX
Kennedy Wilde says
What length do you buy? My hair used to grow super long then I chopped it off in 6th grade and now it grows to one length and stops!!! I need my long hair back!! 😭
Dani Marie Krum says
The ones that I have in are 22′! Mine only grows to a certain length too and is super thin so these fix both of my problems ha.
Tonya Forster says
Wow I am impressed with how real it looks. What length are yours?
Dani Marie Krum says
They are 22′! It’s all in my hair girl why they look so natural, she is amazing!! 🙂

I live near Pittsburgh pa anyone in my area?

Aren’t extensions life saving!? Get the luxe brand in them, they are so much better! Thank you so much girl!! XX
Brenda says
Beautiful hair! I went to Michelle right after Christmas and got the natural beaded rows extensions for the first time! I wore a halo for a year before that – so i can’t really compare with other extensions but Michelle is amazing and so are the natural beaded rows!! Love them!
Haley says
Brenda how did you like your halo? I love mine but want something more permanent.
Julia says
How do these beads compare to the Klix brand? I tried klix and now tape in extensions and still feel they break my hair. My understanding of this brand is the bead is a little larger than Klix therefore uses more hair and less breakage.
Dani Marie Krum says
Hey girl!! So I love the technique that was used for these extensions, however I don’t feel as if I can recommend this brand anymore due to the way that they wore. I am working to find a new brand taht I can fully stand behind and as soon as I do I will let you know!

Tina says
Hey Dani! Do you mean you can’t stand behind the brand of the bead of the Brand of the hair you used (bohyme)? Is there a difference between regular Bohyme and Bohyme luxe? Thank you! xoxo
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Tina! I just sent you an email! XX
Staci says
Can you let me know about the regular Bohyme and Bohyme luxe hair too?? I know I’m a little late but hoping you can help!! Thank you!
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Staci! I actually don’t use it anymore and sadly can’t stand behind it. It completely fell apart on me and I don’t want my readers purchasing something that falls apart or isn’t good quality from my recommendation. I have used Laced Hair and really love it and currently am trying Bellami (Laced hair was out of stock in my color so I tried something new) and am seeing how that goes. Thank you for your comment on this post so I remembered to update the hair that I am using. If you have any questions please feel free to let me know!
Danielle says
Where do i buy your hair I’m not seeing it on your page
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Danielle!
I either purchase my hair from Laced Hair or I am trying Bellami hair this time around 🙂 I hope that helps!
Jayme says
Corius about this as well, Is it the method you can’t stand behind anymore or the brand of hair that you didn’t like how it wore? What did you not like about it?
SUMMER says
Hi there! PLEASE Help! While I actually have THE OPPOSITE type of hair as you, I have been having my hair braided with extensions, sewn in, & now braided again, but with the unbraided part left LOOSE.
This IS my preferred Way!!
So for the last year or so, I had SO MUCH leftover Bohyme hair left, (after sew ins & i had only used ONE TIME!) that I have not had to purchase more Bohyme! My hair girl actually just cuts that hair off the weft & braids it in.
So here’s my issue– I HAVE used almost ALL of my previous Bohyme Hair!! And it’s Pretty difficult & time consuming for my hair girl to use the same hair AFTER having cut it off the Weft. So Bohyme is VERY EXPENSIVE yet VERY Worth it, in This case to me– however, if You Know a COMPARABLE brand I would LOVE TO KNOW! The Cost of Bohyme could SERIOUSLY hurt me! Please Help! Hair appt this Sunday! And THANK YOU FOR THIS COOL POST! – summer
Dani Marie Krum says
Hey!! I have started using Laced Hair and I am absolutely loving it! I hope that helps! XX
SUMMER says
Hi! OmG THANKS! Much Appreciated!
Brandon Stephens says
You have made the task much easier and enjoying. Many people ask me about the installation process of hair extensions, describing whole process again and again is a headache. That’s why this type of articles is what I was looking for.
Solange Joassaint says
I like your hair . Do you have 6″ or 8 ” ( inches)
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi!
My extensions are 22 inches 🙂
Lexa says
Hey lady! Question- have you ever tried the mini tip beaded type extensions (easilock type application)? I have similar, super thin flat hair and am torn between the beaded weft vs mini lock application process. I want to be able to wear my hair up without too much issue! Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated 🙂
Dani Marie Krum says
Yes I have, they didn’t work on my thin hair and honestly were really hard for me to hide. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help!
Michele says
Hi Dani, thanks for this info. I have worn Bellami clip-ins for years and want to have them in a little more permanently with teh beaded weft method. Isn’t the bellami weft a little thick for this application? Also, what city is your stylist in? Any help would be great!
Molly says
Hi Dani – do you have any favorite stylist you can refer in Seattle for these types of extensions?
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Molly!
I would look here to see if there is a stylist in your area! Sadly I don’t know anyone up there and my stylist doesn’t either. I hope this helps!

hello.. love your hair! Loaiming for a recommendation in Chicago. I must definitely want the beaded wefts.
Recommendations?
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi! I’m so sorry, I don’t know anyone in Chicago! You can check out Habit Hair’s website and they have a locator of stylists that they have trained. I hope that helps!
Amanda says
Hi Dani! How did Bellami work? I have a consult today and she does natural beaded rows using bellai’mi… I was concerned because they are not hand tied wefts. Any advice is appreciated! 😘
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Amanda! I currently am still wearing them and have been really happy with them! I actually prefer machine tied over hand tied because I feel like they hold up better and are thicker. I hope your consult went well!
AmandaMunn says
Hello Dani!
I am currently wearing the NBR method. I have very similar hair to yours. Have you noticed any balding spots? I am on my second application (first was in December) and have noticed a couple of spots, near the beginning and end of the tie in, that seems to be balding because of the tension. Is this happening with yours?
Any advice would help. Thank you!
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Amanda! I haven’t had any balding spots. I do know my hair girl is really careful where she places them and moves the placement every time that I get them moved up. I’m so sorry you are having that happen! Maybe ask her to move the placement everytime you get them moved/adjusted or to not pull those front pieces in the beads so tight.
I hope that helps!
Amanda says
Thank you for the response! I’ll see if I can have her adjust!
Haley says
I’m having the same exact issues! I have three bald spots because of the tension. 😭 I’m hoping when I get them moved up we can remedy this or I’ll need to stop using them. The hair also gets super tangled. I’d love some recommendations on how to untangle them, especially when wet. I’m having buyers remorse.
Courtney says
Hi! How many grams come in the bohyme or laced hair and how many did you need? Wondering if I need to order two packs!? Thanks!
Ashley says
Hi there! I’m wondering this same thing!! How many packs would you guys suggest!?
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Ashley!
Honestly it depends on the brand of hair that you buy and how thick/thin your natural hair is. I recommend getting a consult with a stylist who is trained in extensions and they will tell you how many packs. I generally have 2 packs in my hair just because I like my hair crazy thick, but right now I just have one where it was hot and the summer in Utah 🙂
Ashley Floyd says
Hi Dani! I am getting nbr’s put in on Tuesday and my stylist said she is putting in about 13 wefts of hair, some are 18″ and some are 22″ I was wondering if you know how many you had put in here? Thanks!
Brittney says
I’ve tried so many brands of exstensions
I have a problem with matting shedding and breakage due to the color of my hair
I currently had bohyme in and had bad luck
I’m an ice blonde
I’m curious if you found laced or bohyme to last you longer
I know we are different colors but as for hold up and quality your thought
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Brittney!
Laced has lasted me a LOT longer than anything else I have bought. They stay a ton softer and hold up so much better!!
Brittney says
Also I’m in a struggle between bohyme bc they offer 26″ over 22″ I just love my length I’d really appreciate some insite on quality between brands
Mckenzie says
Hey, I actually have been an extension wearer for more than 13 years. I have ALWAYS used bohyme hair. I’m blonde and I’ve never had problems but 2 out of my last 3 batches of bohyme hair I’ve bought have been absolutely terrible! The quality is so poor and within months hair that would normally last me almost a year is ratty, dry and disgusting. I go to a gal in American Fork and she’s awesome. Her salon, Haven, recommends bombshell. Just wondering what you think about hair and if you’ve tried any good brands besides bohyme? I know you’re brunette and I’m blonde so I’m not sure if that makes a difference but I’m going to get new hair end of February and I want to make sure I get a brand that is going to look and last the way bohyme use to look and last, if that makes any sense! Any and all advice on hair to purchase would be awesome. Thanks so much.
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Mckenzie! Ugh I am so sorry and I feel like it is super frustrating especially when you pay so much money for hair! My stylist has really liked Bombshell for blondes! She has had really good success with them. Let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to help and you can always email me too! dani @ danimarieblog.com
Samantha says
I know this blog is older but how many wefts does your stylist use for each row? I currently just got the beaded hand ties and we did 2 rows with 3 wefts each. The problem I am having is my hair is not holding the beads. I am wondering if it’s to heavy and I have super fine thin hair. Just wanted to pick your brain some and see if I need to have it taken down to two wefts each row.
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi! She does about 3 depending on the brand of hair. Do you know how she is putting the beads in? I have pretty thin hair but a lot of it if that makes sense and my beads hold totally fine. You could do 3 rows with 2 wefts each!
Janett Parsons says
I wear extensions as well and the same method. I have not been happy with the quality of hair with the company I have been using for a few years. Where do you buy your hand tied wefts? I love the quality of them.
Dani Marie Krum says
Hi Janett!
I am wearing Couture Wefts right now which is a brand my stylist owns. They aren’t out to the public quite yet, but I have worn Laced Hair and loved it and my stylist has loved Bombshell too!
