The Garage…Our Forgotten Space
I feel like everyone has a space at their house that is completely forgotten. Somewhere that you are kind of embarrassed to show people because it has become your “catch all” spot. Our area in our garage when you go to walk into our house is that for us. It is where we throw all the things, is super disorganized, and honestly embarrasses me to the point where I close the garage really quick when we pull in. I feel like when we moved we made the garage our catch all for all the boxes and such while we put things away inside and it never became anything else…now here we are a year and a half later and this girl is ready for some systems and organization to it.
I started by taking everything away, moving all the “stuff” back and really looking at the area I wanted to organize. While our entire garage needs to be organized, I wanted to start with a small section. I asked Zach to paint that back wall (we have been wanting to since we moved in and this was the perfect excuse) to give it a cleaner and crisper look. I didn’t have a very big budget for the space so I headed to Tuesday Morning to grab some things to organize the area and clean it up where I knew I could find things for really affordable prices.
First thing I knew I wanted was a laundry basket with the removable linen liner. King is always filthy when he plays outside and so is Zach when he is working on a project. I wanted somewhere where they could take their dirty clothes off, the mess says in the garage, but I also can wash the basket liner so it doesn’t look nasty either. This will keep a lot of mess out of my house from walking through the house to go change their clothes.
Second thing I really wanted was a rack where I could put all my returns. I live kind of in the middle of nowhere, the closest stores to me are about 30 minutes away besides a couple grocery stores. I buy a lot of things online which means I don’t try it on ahead of time or it comes looking different than it did online. I wanted somewhere that kept them off the ground but kept the organized and somewhere that I would see them when I went to leave in case I was headed that direction. I found this 3 tiered rolling rack at Tuesday Morning and knew it was perfect. It fits a basket on the top for smaller items, and has two other tiers that I can put other returns.
Next I really wanted a good shoe rack as silly as that sounds. I keep all my nicer shoes in the house but I wanted somewhere that we could organize them. I found this 3 shelf shoe rack and knew it was perfect. We can put dirty/muddy shoes on the bottom where the dirt can fall on to the cement to be swept up, put sandals and other shoes that we wear all the time on the other two shelves. It was super affordable at only $24.99 which made me love it even more!
Lastly where Zach is building lockers in our mudroom I needed somewhere to store the carseat now. It won’t fit on the bench that we are putting in there so I really had my wheels turning on where it could go. I saw this cute table at Tuesday Morning for only $29.99 and knew it would work perfectly. When we are out of the infant carrier stage we can use it to put things on that need to go to school, soccer, or other places or even bring it inside and put it somewhere in our home. I was shocked at the price tag of $29.99 and searched to see if they had another one because it was such an amazing deal.
A few other things that we did to the space was to hang up my wreaths above our coat hooks. I love that while it is storage for my wreaths it looks really pretty too. We moved all the cardboard boxes that I am guilty of just throwing into a pile into the recycle can, and moved some things that were just “stored” in that area and put them where they really will go.
This space is somewhere that makes me happy to pull into my garage now, it is clean, organized, functional, and silly enough pretty! All the pieces I purchased at Tuesday Morning can be wiped down where they are in a garage and now that it is a pretty space I feel like we all will make a better effort to keep it clean too!
