Dry? Lifeless? Static? No hold? Do all these things sound familiar with winter hair? Ugh, I swear taking care of my hair in the winter is the hardest. It is so hard to keep it full of life, moisturized, and make sure that it holds the style all while keeping my extensions in top notch shape. I have tried and tested so many products and am so excited to share what is working for me right now. We all know that I have extensions and am obsessed with them. Taking care of them is key in not having to buy hair as much which equals saving money! So let’s get started on what I am obsessed with using to keep my hair healthy. I will say before we start, spending a little bit more on hair products through the winter is worth it.
1 – Let’s start with shampoo and conditioner. I recently started using Amika Triple RX Shampoo & Conditioner and my hair has never been smoother and more conditioned. It doesn’t get static when I brush it any more and the fly aways are at bay (who really likes fly aways am I right?). This has been a game changer to making sure that my hair has moisture constantly and that it keeps the moisture where I only wash my hair once a week.
2 – Okay, you are now thinking, how does she wash her hair only once a week. I attribute that all to a good dry shampoo. In the spring and summer I love to use the good ‘ol Suave $3 dry shampoo and save some money. However, in the winter when my hair is struggling, it is worth spending more and using the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo because it will keep the moisture in your hair way better than the Suave and it brings so much life to it. It is seriously the only way my hair has life in the winter. I even use it when my hair is fresh and clean out of the shower to add some texture to it and to hold my curls longer.
3 – If you only buy one product from this post, make it this UN.TANGLED spray from Kevin Murphy especially if you have extensions. This is seriously my life line. It is what keeps my extensions untangled and my regular hair smooth and soft. I spray it in after the shower and brush through my hair and let it air dry. I only use it once a week (when I wash my hair) so the bottle lasts forever. It is worth every single penny people. GAME CHANGER.
4 – If you are an oil user, the Amika Oil Treatment will be your game changer. I actually use it with my UN.TANGLED spray and it makes it the double duo. It isn’t heavy on my hair and doesn’t leave it feeling greasy. I generally curly my hair (well touch up let’s be honest who has time to curl their hair everyday) and after I curl it I put this Oil Treatment from about half way down to my ends and it keeps my ends moisturized and my hair so soft.
5 – If your hair is in the struggling point until you get it back moisturized and healthy or you are on day 11 of washing your hair and need it to look shiny and clean (this is my secret weapon) use the Kevin Murphy SHIMMER.SHINE spray. It has gold flakes in it and you just twirl the bottle (don’t shake it) in your hands before you spray it and it puts all those pretty gold flakes into your hair so your hair looks shiny, healthy, and clean.
6 – If you are a mom bun wearer like I am on the daily. Try these coiled elastics. They are a lot easier on your hair and they hold my hair so well. I love that they don’t leave a crease in my hair either like a traditional elastic.
7 – If you hair is super long (and fake ha or real if you’re lucky) like mine then you know how tangled it can get at bedtime and that can bring breakage to it. What I do is either a super high pony tail tied loosely with a scrunchie (yes I said scrunchie) or a loose french braid down the back tied of with my favorite scrunchie. This keeps my hair untangled and my curls in tact so I don’t have breakage from sleeping or have to add extra heat on it to curl all of it again.
What are your go to hair secrets for the winter? I would love to hear them and try some new products!
